WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Cuso International has embarked on a process of renewal. In an era of rapidly changing contexts for international cooperation, we are seeking dynamic individuals to join our Board of Directors as we implement a new Strategic Plan. We are recruiting up to four (4) new Directors in September for a term of three (3) years. Members of our Board of Directors are experienced and committed leaders, bringing a wide range of expertise, knowledge and perspective to Cuso programs.

EXPERTISE / SKILLS

We are seeking a mix of skills and expertise to facilitate discussion on key strategic issues. Experience may include, but is not limited to, the following areas:

  • Expertise in International development in the Global South
  • Expertise in working with Indigenous communities and/or migrants and refugee communities in Canada
  • Strategic planning, policy development and public advocacy
  • Financial management, audits and accounting
  • Non-profit sector operations
  • Human resources management
  • Fundraising and donor relations
  • Public communications and digital technology
  • Legal and governance

In addition, we are seeking a number of attributes to ensure diversity and representativeness in our governance. Considerations in this area may include, but are not limited to those in the list below:

  • Geographic representation across Canada
  • Linguistic and cultural diversity
  • Gender balance
  • Youth leadership participation
  • Prior experience as a volunteer with Cuso

The list of experiences and attributes provided above is for reference and indication only. Candidates for a Director position with Cuso are not required to have all of the experiences or attributes noted above to be considered. All candidates are invited to share how their unique experience will contribute to the collective quality and diversity of our Board.

EXPECTATIONS

Board Members are expected to:

  1. Commit to the core values of Cuso International and adhere to the Code of Conduct
  2. Act as advocate for Cuso International in support of the organization’s Mission, Vision and Values, as well as the growth of the organization
  3. Understand, and support, the principle of fiduciary responsibility of Boards of Directors
  4. Be a philanthropic supporter of Cuso International (within their means)
  5. Foster collegial and positive working relationships with other Board members and staff
  6. Prepare well for meetings and contribute to special projects and/or advisory committees
  7. Attend all Board meetings (4 x 1-day meetings per year, alternating in-person and virtual)
  8. Commit to membership on at least 1 Board committee (5-6 virtual meetings per year)
  9. Attend external meetings/fundraising events, as needed
